Rapid games? Why is speed chess so popular?

Have you seen the "2 minutes total game time"  games?  I have never understood blitz chess.  What is the attraction?  Is it harmful to your game?  Why do masters games have generous amounts of time?

Why do people drink espresso outta those little cups?

Why do we have an appendix? 

so we can survive the bordom of playing against the london system and the classical CK ;)

Thank God I didn't marry one of you.  Our kids would be horribly eaten up with the smart-alek remarks.  I have never seen such a great display.

And those little espresso cups are horrible.  I used to make one BIG cup of espresso when i had my own espresso machine.

The appendix is there to just cause problems.

When I pay a lot of blitz (fics), I mean like a hundred or more games, without playing standard in that time, my standard takes a nose-dive for a little while. But blitz is fun. It's just more about winning or losing than a slow game, which is more about learning, for me. Tactics, swindles, and gambling. That's what blitz is about, for me.
