rapid vs blitz

I am interested to hear what people's experiences of playing different time controls are and the different time control pools. For me my rapid rating has been consistently 400 to 500 points higher than my blitz rating even as I improved a decent amount over the last 12 months. I know my strength is definitely a part of it, in blitz I just walk my king around getting forked by knights in endgames all day and I do that less often in rapid. But it also seems to me that a 1100 blitz player is less likely to blunder a full piece than a 1500 rapid player, even though maybe the other parts of the play is worse. A big part of it for sure is because I learned chess as an adult. what is your experience?

I sed to mostly play rapid, and my right was usually significantly higher by at least 200 points. Now as I got more into blitz and the "blitz way of thinking", both of my ratings are starting to slowly match each other.

Made too many typos from my phone there, but you know what I mean.

what is a blitz way of thinking? I need some tools to use when I am low on time in any time control too

Blitz and Rapid and classical are like ice cream with different flavors. And each one requires a different type of thinking. Classical gives you time for long term planning. Because you can think out your moves longer. Blitz gives you little time, so you have to be more practical about your moves. Hence, you would rely on gut instinct and experience for your moves. I never used to like blitz as much because of the more superficial feel for the game. But when you get stronger at your longer time limit games, you will also play better when you play blitz. It's like learning to walk before you can run properly.

I mostly play rapid as I don't like how Blitz can be won or lost based on mere seconds on the clock. I pretty much use Blitz exclusively to train openings now and get pattern recognition, and translate that practice into my Rapid where I try the most

Real chess is over the board classical 90|30.
Online staring at the screen that long strains the eyes, so 15|10 is best.
For fun you can play blitz, preferably 5|3 or 3|2.
Top grandmasters play online 1|0 as they fear engine cheating.

I prefer rapid, as you can think through moves, and the opening is not a nearly as decisive part of the game.

Rapid for learning.

Blitz for fun.

I am scared of bullets, man. One wrong move and the bullet will kill me.
