I have never been very good in rapid time controls, my OTB rating in standard (1579)being nearly 150 Elo above my rapid (1403). In standard, I feel like I have so much time to work though the position, and rapid and blitz I always feel rushed. Has anyone else encountered this, and what are ways to get better at blitz and rapid?
Edit: These are not my exact ratings, my actual rating are plus or minus a few Elo points
Of course, others have experienced it. Actually, my worst control is rapid. I'm much better at blitz and standard than I am at rapid. Part of it has to do with how much practice you get at rapid. I've also found that players who have been playing longer through youth tend to be much better rapid players. I think that much of this has to do with the "road map" idea presented in Move First, Think Later. By "road map," we are talking about intuition, which is a fancy way of referring to consolidated information in our subconscious. On top of that, board vision and speed of calculation are very important to rapid. In my case, I have built a pretty strong intuition, but my calculation is not fast, so there is about 150 point gap between my USCF blitz and rapid rating.
Like anything, doing exercises on skills associated with rapid will be able to help you out a great deal.
