Time is obviously not the only thing that counts in a bullet game, checkmate does as well for instance. And if you have no material anymore, you can't checkmate, so you can't win in any way. That's the rules of chess, not just on this site.
Rated & so on...
kwaloffer, normally i do (fully) agree with your opinion bout that. But especially Bullet & Blitz... it is just al about time, and nothing more !!! Who, here on this site (or others) will say: Yes, Bullet & Blitz is really a perfect way to play chess ?!
I guess nobody will say such a thing. It's just about time & nothing more !!!

I think what's happening is that unrated players are accepting your invites and you mistook the (unrated) next to their name to mean unrated game. All the (unrated) means is that they haven't played any rated games yet. Once the game is completed, they'll get a rating. If you don't want to play unrated players, then use the setting "must have played ____ games." I usually put in 10 or so. Not that I don't want to ever play unrated players, but I've found out that a lot of people new to the site tend to time out a lot, and I feel that's a waste of my time.
Yes i know, in those cases it is most of the time so that i only got my King left, and he/she got more pieces on the board, but still is the time on my side !!!? So, and when it is all about time ? What does it matter how many pieces my opponent got ? I just got the time on my side, and that should be the only thing what counts in a Bullet & Blitz game.
The rules are clear that having mating capability when your opponent times out does matter. Stating otherwise over and over again won't change that.
I do open sometimes a new game (online chess). I choose my own options. No, no, no... it's not because i like to give a 'strange' name to the game. It's just i want those 14 days. In fact, just that's the reason to choose "my own" game.
But another point is: i only want to play rated. I choose: this is a rated game. How is it possible that player accept my open invite with the unrated option ? (I see that immediately when the game starts). So i break off immediately those games, because i want rated.
Well, 1 point left. In Blits & Bullet it's all about time. And in my opinion: nothing more. Well, facing that, how is it possible that i'll be confronted wit a draw when the time from my opponent has expired ???

Still it is so (isn't it ?) that he/she did not, couls not checkmate me ? So in those cases i should win the game. (Reverse it should be the same thing, than i should loose !).
This is just an opinion from me, but to me it looks not to be fair, but again, that's my opinion. (Especially in the Bullet & Blitz games)
