You can't spend ratings points at a grocery store. They don't really matter.

However, it is nice to see your rating rise when you play well or when you have learned something. If you don't play rated games, you won't have that experience.

Play rated games. If you lose and your rating drops, then you will begin to start playing against players with skills more similar to yours. Then you can work your way back up the rating ladder, getting better and better as your opponents also get better.

My rating really went down while I was studying and began putting what I was learning into practice. I made mistakes, but I learned from my mistakes by analyzing where I went wrong. I noticed my rating is creeping back up again. I think if you worry too much about your rating, you're not going to try new things (new openings, sacrifices, etc.). I've started playing the French defense, instead of my more familiar Sicilian, as black. It helps me not only learn a new defense (I actually like it as black), but I'm also learning how to play it as white. I've even experimented with the English defense. I would focus more on learning than your rating.

By the way, you get a separate rating for blitz, so go right ahead. I've been playing 10 minute games, which probably doesn't qualify as blitz, but it's quicker than 30 minute games. I've noticed it forces me to think more quickly, which I think is helping my game.
