Yeah, chess.com will soon be introducing live internet chess to their website where you will be able to play with other members which will be a good experience. So soon be on the look out for that and check it out!
I see you are located in the US. For the United States you can join the US Chess Federation. I am a member of the USCF and I think it is a good organization. You will be able to play in rated tournaments around your local area to get an `official` USCF rating. Also USCF members get a monthly chess magazine covering all of the recent US Chess. I usually play in about 2 USCF tournaments a month and I think it is a fun experience to go to real tournaments and play against opponents in real life chess. My current USCF rating is 1784, and about 5 years ago when I started I was rated 545, and now a lot higher. It is nice to see my USCF rating steadily going up as I improve my chess skills by studying, practicing, and learning more about the game. Also the USCF has a special title of `National Master` if you ever hit the 2200 rating level. I hope to achieve this title in the next few years and then be strong enough to teach chess and give lessons to improving scholastic players. This has always been a dream of mine, to help others improve.
I hope my comment has helped you learn some more about our national organization, the USCF. Also, remember about the new feature on chess.com which will come soon, live internet chess!
The book 'Chess Exam and Training Guide' by Igor Khmelnitsky is a really nice puzzle book which marks your results and can give you a pretty good estimate of your rating.
Bear in mind that all ratings a relative, so your rating with one organisation or website might be different to another.
