ok so i've noticed that if you're rating goes up then it drops back down low again that the number of rating points you get if you win, and lose if you lose becomes lower.

ok i'll try and re phrase it then say you rating is 1200 then it goes up to 1500. then if your rating drops back down to 1200 then you will win less rating points by winning games than you originally would have if your rating hadn't gone up to 1500. once again it might not be true.
When you begin, the ratings are more fluid to help you find the rating you belong at quickly. The more you play in a short period of time, the fewer points you are rewarded/penalized with. If my understanding is correct, if you want to be big swings again, stop playing for a while. Of course, this means that if you keep playing all along, your rating should theoretically be about the same.
The kind of ratings used here is called Glicko. You can look it up.
