I think it's possible and maybe even probable. But the average rating of GMs will probably have to increase somewhat for that to happen. A rating of 3000 will be very hard to achieve playing against others in the 2500-2600s, since even a draw will set you back significantly compared to how many points you gain for a win.

But that has to happen as the tail of the distribution gets larger. Computers are out there in the 3200's or whatever and GM's will just follow along behind as they use computer analysis and learn how to play better from computers.
That's very true. I was just pointing out that I don't believe it will be just a handful of players "skyrocketing" to the 3000s.
