I want to maintain a 1600 rating by the end of the year. That's all : )

nice, what does a player have to work on to make that jump?

I guess it depends on the player's strengths and weaknesses.

In my case, I need to play more games during the year, practice regularly between tournaments (especially tactics), make sure to be properly rested, focus during the games and try not to look for too complicated solutions to problems arising on the chessboard.

I've never really played before except one so called "game" where I made an idiot blunder, and resigned. I just took this up a couple months ago because I read that learning chess helps improve your concentration. So My goal I guess, is to learn to play a simple game without doing something stupid.

well playing is how to learn best, so if you want to go again I sent you another.

its to be expected when you start out (a quick loss) and that position is very confusing if you havnt seen it before. you did do a few nice things, namely the idea of protecting the weakened square (even though it didnt work in this case) and resigning was actually good too, as it showed you understand what many 1500s dont get on here (who drag their heels)

thanks, I always like to hear what higher players work on. do you do your tactics on somewhere like chesstempo? or a book?.. and do you set them up on a real board? (seems to help me transition to otb better)

My routine tactics training goes like this :

  • I try to train every day
  • I alternate between chesstempo (standard mode) for accuracy and Tactics Trainer (for timed pattern recognition)
  • I solve problems on screen and goes on till I have 2 problems wrong (on chesstempo), or 3 (on tactics trainer)
  • I review the problems I did wrong, and replay the solution in my head - I sometimes store some of them in a special training file
  • From time to time I replace this basic training with solving problems from Polgar's 450 first problems in the 5333+1 book, or by solving problems from the 'special file'

All in all this training regimen works well for me, and doesnt' take too much time (that's maybe 15-20' a day).

That's interesting to hear you say that... I've noticed if I'm calculating some long involved line that it means I've usually missed something, so try to focus on short and accurate to avoid oversights.

It seems like most of you guys have pretty high ratings. do you have any advice for a young punk like me? I really want to get to a higher rating, but my method of just playing and gaining experience does not seem to be bettering my rating/style/winning.

Chess.com or OTB national ratings?  The great majority of players do not make it to 1500 after only 1 year, so I don't think that's a fair expectation.

Now I know in Soviet Russia if you showed a bit of talent they'd give you a coach and have you to 1800 from nothing in 1, 2 years tops.  If someone plays as a hobby and studies on their own when they can, anything more than 200 points in a year just isn't going to happen.  In fact you should be happy gaining 100 points in a year.  Of course it all depends on where you'll end up... usually an 1000 player can gain faster than a 2000 player for obvious reasons... just wanted to point this out.

My biggest 1 year jump was 300 points, from a 1500 player to 1800 in 1 year. This jump came as I was studying " My System" by A Nimzovich.  I remember it because our club used to give a trophy each year for " most improved player " and I won it twice over the years but the 300 point jump smashed all the competition.

Hmm, you must have been very active in the tournaments that year :)

Yes these jumps are possible.  I'd be willing to bet though that you had been "stuck" at 1500 for a while, then the accumulated knowledge "broke through" after you shored up some kind of critical weakness with "My System"

It's somewhat hard for me to imagine such a jump though because in my limited experience with chess my progress has been fairly steady.  I felt a jump in strength at one point, but wasn't active enough to know by how much exactly... basically I began applying what I already knew in a consistent way and it happened after I started visiting a club full of 1800-2100 players as a 1600 player.  I say "full" but it was basically 4-6 guys :)

It's too bad you're in Europe Reb, I'd ask for an invite your secret underground master club and get killed night after night like I did with that other club.  I really enjoyed it even though it also pissed me off... but in a good way :)

wow read the comments on this page and I'm the only one who says somethink that higer than the actual rating, am I being too optimistic??

maybe is becouse i have much more free time than adults and becouse I am continuing to go up in this site: from when I joined  i haven't stabilized myt rating

Kernicterus

Maybe we should form little clubs...like "Trying to get to 1700" Club or something...and make ambitious friends/opponents around our ratings.
