It depending how much effort you put in, a little bit each time maybe 1500 by the end of the year, alot of effort and studies 1700-1800 by the end of the year ?

Chess.com or OTB national ratings?  The great majority of players do not make it to 1500 after only 1 year, so I don't think that's a fair expectation.

Now I know in Soviet Russia if you showed a bit of talent they'd give you a coach and have you to 1800 from nothing in 1, 2 years tops.  If someone plays as a hobby and studies on their own when they can, anything more than 200 points in a year just isn't going to happen.  In fact you should be happy gaining 100 points in a year.  Of course it all depends on where you'll end up... usually an 1000 player can gain faster than a 2000 player for obvious reasons... just wanted to point this out.

My biggest 1 year jump was 300 points, from a 1500 player to 1800 in 1 year. This jump came as I was studying " My System" by A Nimzovich.  I remember it because our club used to give a trophy each year for " most improved player " and I won it twice over the years but the 300 point jump smashed all the competition.

Well, you just smash the competition anyway Reb!! You are so high rated!! I can only dream about a rating that high, but I can try to achieve my goals. My best win was over Zug, a NM, BTW. I think that will stay my best win, as he made some REALLY bad moves (they must be really bad as they are by my standards).

As high as I can get it (live chess only), right now I seem to be stuck in the mid 1300's

I wish I could play in top male events like Linares, Corus A, Dortmund, etc. 2700+ should do the job Laughing

I don't understand why women can't.

My goal is to have a goal for each move I make.

My short term goal is to make it back above 1300 here and back above 1100 USCF. My long term goal is to make at least "B" level in the USCF.

Avatar of Eniamar

My goal is to hit 1600 USCF before I run out of free time with my workload.

1600 FIDE. Then reassess.

1900 Blitz on chess.com by the end of this year. Not just 1900, but the one that will bring my standard (time control) play a lot higher than that. My style for best play is the Karpov style, but I want some Kasparov/Fischer element in my style.

and above 1900 I'm taking y'all out to Sizzler.

To play chess??

Avatar of Ytse_Ham

I'd like to be a solid 1500 by the end of the semester. Not amazing, but I feel that my rating is deflated as it stands right now. I have a tendency to play strongly except for a blunder or two I manage per game.

I didn't know Sizzlers made its way down to Australia.

Avatar of platolag
