Hey! So im VERY new to chess, and ''self-taught'' so i still have a lot to learn in almost every way lol. With that said, I started learning a little while ago with the lessons provided until i got stuck on the part where you gotta pay which is not an option atm for me. (also i feel like they barely touched on how to checkmate so i struggled for ages with that and still do)

I've been playing some live chess and as i understand, the chess.com ratings are lower than official ratings that decide titles, correct? Regardless of that, how come i started with a rating of 400? I looked at my stats and im in the 4.1% percentile, which just makes me feel even worse haha.

I think im just now starting to win more than i lose, especially when it comes to winning pieces and playing for lategame, but can only really do a ''rolling checkmate''. (idk if thats the right name, but i mean the one where you force the king to 1 side by continuously moving 2 rooks/2 queens/1 rook 1 queen until king hits the wall and is mated)

So my question now is: Where can i go from here to improve? Should i just keep playing and hope i build muscle memory and find openings/strategies that work well for me? I found playing 5min games is my favourite, which i think is classed as blitz games? But i feel really dirty when i should have obviously lost and i win by time or by running around until he accidentally stalemates me

Don't worry about what you start at. All ratings quickly adjust to the appropriate level.

Why don't you take the lessons on how to checkmate? https://www.chess.com/lessons/course/412

It is part of the series of free lessons at https://www.chess.com/blog/webmaster/free-chess-mentor-courses
