Rating points

Simple (and probably stupid) question:

Why are so many more points on offer in online games than live?  I won literally 3 games online and saw my rating go up by more than 200 points, whereas live games only carry 7 points on average. The opponents' ratings are similar in range between the two types of fixture in my settings, so that can't be the explanation. Short of winning a hundred games on the bounce, how is it even possible to significantly improve your live chess rating under this system?

Systems are similar.     Until you play a certain number of games IN EACH RATING AREA, there will be large swings in Ratings when you win or lose, until you hit whatever number of games when things "slow" down for THAT RATING AREA.

For example, you can play 100+ games in Standard chess and your Rating fluctuates slowly each game.   However when you first try Blitz chess, each game, win or lose has a big affect on your Rating.

That is also true of the Tactics Trainer.

Yeah, don't worry. Unless you are really strong, you will soon get to sit by and watch your rating go down.

After my initial jump, it took several months for me to come back to my highest rating.

It's because of the metric system.

HA! Knew it was evil. Glad we (America) never fell for that metric trap.

You play really bad at live. You are 2:1 win:loss at geriatric time controls so maybe the geriatric game is for you.

I agree I play much worse at live, however, that isn't really the point.  Even if I'd won every live game I'd played, at a rate of 7 points per game it'd take MANY games to see a significant increase in rating.

I too noticed the 'swing' effect at the beginning, however, no (live) game I've played for quite some time has had a point offer of anything other than +7 for win, -1 draw, or -9 for loss.

I've tried with that article, but it makes my head swim.  Thanks anyway.

The wider the gap in ratings, the more points are won or lost.

Well you only played a few games at one speed and played really badly, gaining buggerall points, whereas if you won a few more you'd get like 200 for the first win, 100 for the 2nd or so.

But the losses are the spoiler.
