Rating subtraction and addition

Chess.com keeps on continuously adding the smallest amount to my rating when I win yet when I lose it subtracts some random large amount .

sai_nanda

By random what i mean is that when I just barely lose it subtracts around 25 or 30 elo

This is including when I play a standard game as well

sigma
Play more than 2 games then it should go to 7W -7L

That is only my standard games what I’m referring to is my variant rating

If you are playing players lower rated than you, this could be the reason why. Chess.com makes you get less winning against people that you should already be able to beat, and lose more against people who you should be winning against. Otherwise, I see no reason why this should happen, and it may just be an illusion caused by only noticing when things are against you, like getting little, while losing a lot, and ignoring when things are with you, like winning a lot, and losing little. However, this is highly unlikely and can rarely be applied properly. In conclusion, I think that, unless you are playing against players lower rated than you, your conclusion may be invalid.

Thanks, but I don’t understand how my variant rating starts off at 1600 then, after 1 game, goes down to ~1560

The amount of rating that you gain or lose is NOT random. It depends on several factors.

1) The result of the game, win / lose / draw.

2) The rating difference between the opponents. Beating a weaker player is worth little. Losing to a weaker player will cost you many points.

3) Each variant and time control maintains its own rating. Blitz is seperate from Rapid. Rapid is seperate from Daily. Variants (eg: 3-check) have their own rating. And so on.

4) The number of games that you have played recently in that variant and time control. If you've only played a few games in a particular variant or time control then that rating will undergo large swings up and down.

Your variant rating went down 40 points for one loss because with only one game played your rating is provisional, and undergoes large swings until you've played about ten games. By then, the adjustment will be down to about +8/-8 per game.
