I am new here. Please tell me how my numerical rating is determined and what it means. Thank you.

the higher it is the better you are.

I meant how is the number determined.  How many points for a win, etc.

Thank  you.

How high or low can I go?

Do I lose more points if I am checkmated than if I resign?

Thank you.

I understand that a rating of 1000 - 1199 is an ''average social player.''    Does that description sound right?

your rating is also calculated by your glicko rating

your glicko basically represents how much you play- the more you play the lower your glicko gets and the less rating one wins or loses after a game

if you are a new account or havent played in awhile them your rating can fluctuate +/- 200 per game
