Good is a relative term.
I think a 1200 on this site is probably good enough to beat 80% of all players anywhere who know the rules. Does that make him good? I don't know.

1200 is the average rating, so "Good" in my opinion is anybody above 1200. People above 2000 are usually chess masters.
But there's a big difference between chess.com ratings and actual OTB ratings...

Masters, on here, tend to be 2200-2400.
in my own point of view ....
1200-1600
1601-1800
1801-2000
2001-2300
2301+
thats how i divide and anticipate their strengths...

Really Yodina? (I'm assuming that's your statement that a 200 point rating difference is meaningless, and not jchurch's as you've attributed it). What's your record against people rated 200 points higher than you?
i think it dosent matter, i mean, anyone can be a good player, it dosent matter how many points they have.... i think. ♪♫♪

i tend to agree that 1800+ is when one starts becoming "good". it's hard to beat an 1800 player if they are on their game. i remember when i was 1800 - i thought was a lot better than i actually was lol. but i was beginning to understand theory, openings, stuff like that. it's fun!
