Rating

I hgeartily agree with the above comment, I have been shocked by some of the
ratings given, too high and too low !

Comments are good and can be encouraging or discouraging depending on the sincerity of the "commentor". But to get a real rating, one has to challenge himself to participate in an official chess tournament sanctioned by FIDE. But on the other hand, On Line Chess can be challenging as well, and players can be more freely 'Experimental' in playing their games to test a theory, than can later be practiced in actual tournaments.

You know I feel ratings are a little intimidating, especially to someone new like me. However, you and I quickly got past that and we play unrated games most of the time. But I want to also add, for spice, we will have rated games. But no matter what happens, I do not want ratings to interfere with online friendships like ours.

I agree that ratings should not affect friendships among players, here in Chess.com. But it certainly is a great topic. But somehow, I think, rating affects relationships among players. Rating reflects one's experience at Chess.com. And experience reflects effort. And effort reflects passion. So rating somehow reflects one's passion in one's games. So players are somehow judged by his/her rating.
But games are affected by one's mood at the time he/she made those moves. And everyday, anytime, mood is affected by situations. Unlike in actual official Chess tournaments, one prepares for that moment.
But as the saying goes, "Real Chess players are artists, but not all artists are chess players".

I love that! Unrated games are great for friends; but, I think we all still want rated games for the "inner beast" in us all.
