Ratings compared to real life

if i am averaging a rating of 1200-1300 on this site, what do you think that translates to in a real life rating?

bobbyDK

since real life rating start at 1000 you might be 1200.

but real life chess rating isn't about live 10 minutes games. it is about 2 hours games time control(4 hours game)

so it all depends how good you are to use your time.

I have met a lot in 2 hours game who are quite good at 2 hours but cannot play fast and are easy to beat otb in 10 minutes games.

Online ratings are as "real" life as any others. They measure past performance and predict outcomes in a game that exists wholly in the mind, although there are tables* containing pieces both in the material and virtual worlds.

*See Socrates concerning the "real" table, and hence the "real" game of chess.

I generally play 30min games on here. Now and then i play a blitz game, but i perform better when i have time to plan out moves. I seem to do well against players ranks about 1250 and below. Once i start getting into the 1300s and higher i start to find a challenge.

in real life your rating can go below 1000?

not in denmark you cannot go lower than 1000(in danish chess union rating system), but in Norway they start at 800. I don't know with other countries.

why do you keep repeating "0"?

Swiss_Gambit

Does that mean my 1750+ standard rating is real?

AngeloPardi

Chess.com ratings are said to be a little higher than OTB ratings.

even more than otb because you play more. of course it depends how often you play at tournaments otb but in live standard you play all the time and with even more at the same level.

otb ratings are often inflated by people playing in more than one tournaments at the same time.

if you start 3 otb tournaments with 1400 and you do well in each you can easily end with a rating higher than 1600.

on chess.com you get the rating gain or loss at end of each game .

The point is,OTB ratings and Online ratings have no relation. This has been repeated 1000's of times on the forums.I just did it twice.

that is not entirely true....I agree with online chess there you are allowed to use database and analysis board

but in 2 hours live standard you are also on your own with no help available it is basicly the same.

Nope. Not many people take Live Standard seriously.A lot of the guys just experiment with various openings. It is all fun.Different from OTB where your FIDE/USCF ratings are at stake, not to mention the points.Various cheaters in live chess as well.Suppose a guy is rated 1900 in Standard. You can say that he is good but cant say that he should be rated 1900 FIDE,1700 USCF or stuff.Doesn't work that way.The same guy might just be rated 1500 OTB.The Opponents on here in Standard are generally much weaker than those you face OTB.

USCF ratings start at 100.  My youngest son lost his first 3 games in his first tournament and started with a rating of 100.  I think he is up to about 600 now.  He won an award for biggest upset once when he beat someone close to 1000 and he was only rated about 400.

There are lots of kids rated below 1000.  At that level, the ratings don't mean much because many kids are under-rated and/or improving so quickly that their current rating is inaccurate.
