It may not be great, but the USCF is far and away the only organization organized in US chess, so probably best to support them if you're interested in rated chess. Cheap rating companies like Express Chess stuff is nice for scholastic kids whose parents are having them play chess for 1 or 2 semesters and appreciate keeping costs down.

I have seen previous discussions that talk about how useless USCF has become, how bad the magazine is, etc. What I was hoping to discuss and find out is what alternatives there are for United States chess players to play in rated tournaments. I think competative chess is a good thing and adds to the game but I am not sure USCF is doing a good job running the world of US chess. Seems to be a high membership cost just to play rated games.
Does anyone know of any alternatives and if so any opinions on them.
I know one, Chess Express Ratings, cxrchess.com, but to be honest I don't know alot about them.
