Well, Congratulations!
Reached goal of 1600
Well done - what would you say were your major imnprovements to get to this level. My highest was about 1380 or so and I've been playing for years. Would love to make 1600 !
Read reassess your Chess by Jeremy Silman or watch all his videos on here, then:
Its all about NOT making a blunder. Sometimes a blunder can also be positional or calculation. Thats where Silman can help.
Then after every move, ask yourself,
- Whats my plan
- What can my opponent do right now.
- Whats my opponents best move after I move.
(Which calculation is faster, opponent or mine)
- How does my move help my plan
Asking yourself these things each move, will ensure you blunder less, you might lose a few games on time because of this.
I think I need to do this myself, to win more matches and make it to 1700
"Reasses your Chess" is a great book, for sure. "My System" by Nimzo is also terrific. Either one of those books will give you a strong (master-level) grasp of positional play.
Also, you might want to start working on an opening repertoire. Everyman Chess has its "Starting Out" books for each main opening and defense. If you know which ones you want to play, getting one of those books is definitely a step in the right direction.
Congrats on 1600, by the way! I remember the day I hit it. What an exciting feeling! :D
After 3 years of Chess on this site, with lots of blunders and lucky games, I reached my goal of 1600.
I started off in chess at FICS about 10 years ago as 1000. I don't always play and take time off, sometimes months or years.
I guess next goal would have to be 1700.
How to achieve this goal?
I feel that I can still only read 2 moves ahead in blitz.
Its such a long way to go, there is 100,000+ players that can beat me without even looking at the board.
