Reading a cross table

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help me, I am low rated chess player and have played in a few chess tournaments but don't fully understand the cross table information.

I understand who won and who lost but the information added at each round is what I don't understand, for example: if I played in round one and lost the game to a higher rated opponent in the relevant column the information is as follows - 5w0. I understand that W is for white and 0 is for the loss, however, what in the name of Hades is the 5 for? I assumed it was grading points lost for that match but my rating went up in the tournament despite a final score of 1.5/5. Also, if it was points lost or won then adding them together does not add up either. I went from an ECF rating of 58 to 70 as and most of my opponents were nearly double my rating.

Thank you.

I think it means that you played against the player in fifth place.

Ah! That's it, I have just taken a look and that works out. Fantastic, thank you... cant believe I didn't spot that, clearly a university education doesn't count for much these days.
