Reason for decline?

I received a game challenge for online chess today and for the first time felt like declining.  I hit the no thanks button and then got a pop up box asking me to explain why I declined.  Can someone tell me what this box is about.  Does it go to the person whose game I declined or to the people who run this site?  Also is there a purpose why I need to explain myself?  Is there any negative consequence to sdaying no to a challenge?

In case you were wondering, the reason I wanted to say no to the game is because the opponent has 185 current games, I don't believe a person can give full effort to that many games at once and I didn't want to participate.  After I saw the box questioning my reasons I backed out and accepted the game but I want to know for the future.

Yeah, it sucks.

Why can some guy I've never heard of challenge me without telling me why he chose me, and why he wants to play, but I have to give  a reason for declining. Now I just ignore it, the challenge eventually expires/goes away.

It goes to the person who challenged you.

Just good manners to decline a challenge with reason rather than just ignore it.

No.

Perhaps, you should have said this to the person who challenged you.

I agree with rooperi.

When challenged, there is no side note from the challenger, but there is a field to write a reason for declining. Doesn't make sense IMO.

Having said that, you do not need to write anything, just confirm the empty text and it will go away.

It's odd that chess.com would have set it up so the default is to put the person who got challenged in what can be an awkward position.  Like Rooperi said, why should someone have to explain themselves to a total stranger who for some reason picked them for an opponent?  The default should be no explanation box, with an option to include a line if desired.

I haven't had to deal with this myself because I've selected the not available for challenges option.  I do that because I don't like playing more than a couple dozen or so games and I prefer playing tournaments and team matches rather than random single games.  But I would find the automatic explanation box a little irksome.

If you dont wanna explain, you can just hit the ignore bottum,

mateologist

the point is you should not have to explain anything to anybody! that "feature" has got to go." NO" i decline your challendge" EXPLAINS ITSELF " no other commentary is needed. this just opens the door for verbul abuse between the players GET RID OF IT

If it's a total stranger I don't mind leaving it blank (you can leave the explanation blank).  I figure they wanted a game and so sent out a bunch of requests to random people.  It's not going to hurt their feelings if you don't give them a reason.
