Receiving abuse from weaker players.

I was playing bullet recently and for the first time in a while opened up my matchmaking settings to play some lower rated players. I was surprised by the amount of insults that I received after comfortably winning games. Players in the range of about 1700-2000 (I'm currently at 2150) consistently called me a moron/cheap/the worst 2000 player ever etc etc.

Has anyone else encountered this? It just seems bizarre to me to insult someone who has completely outplayed you and based on rating alone is a significantly stronger player.

There’s no place for that behavior in chess. Report them.

I play in focus mode, so i don't expose myself to comments of any kind.

A few things you can do: tighten up the range of your games (say plus or minus 100), turn off any Chat function you have open or better yet never turn it on. If your opposite player is nasty and rude - report them, then block and then move on. If your opposite player is just rude, then just block them and move on.

Millions of people on this site, don't let the players with a shallow virtual ego get you down.

If you barrack for Collingwood I reckon it's fair enough. happy.png

There is a setting to turn off the chat function. Do so and you won't have to listen to them.

Why does this even bother you?

Opponents very rarely talk, send private messages, etc.

Either you were unlucky and ran into some rude people.

Or you're instigating it in the game chat during games (this is usually the case with people who get a lot of rude messages).

Ridicolous

Probably the latter.

Almost nobody uses the chat, I never received a GG in all those year I'm playing here.

I also thought only low rated players start insulting you after losing. But two days ago a Finnish FM started trashtalking after losing a blitz game in a tournament. I guess that's an improvement.

I guess you've never seen Hikaru play? tongue.png

I think it's like a bell curve. On the low end they insult because dunning kruger makes them think they're amazing.

On the high end (like GMs) they insult because they've put in more work than 99% of players, and are realy good, and they have an unreasonable amount of pride because of it (some pride is reasonable, but you shouldn't be insulting people).

It seems to me that people in the middle are the most relaxed. They're good enough to know how bad they are, but not so good that they have an ego about it.

I encountered that too in the chat. Yesterday, I was playing 4-player chess, and these players, started chatting,"Let's team up against Yellow (which was me). I told them you can't team up because it says in the instructions. Read it. They said they didn't care. I kept telling them that. Then, Blue, who was one of them said,"I'm going to report you." I don't even know why. Then, one of them said,"curse Red (who was another player).

I have a question: How do you turn off chat?

The setting is called "game chat" after following this link:

https://www.chess.com/settings/live

But also during the game I think there's a button to disable the chat, so you could do it only to some players... it's so rare that anyone chats to me I don't even know tongue.png but I'm pretty sure I saw a button like that a few times haha.

RachelDuTS

That's for live chess, but what about 4-player chess?

stiggling

I don't know.

KingSonicTheChessHedgehog

always they blame me for this

I can definitely relate brother, in my case however it's often higher functioning people that insults me every chance he got, like for God's sake, so he's smart and all, but is he a family man like me? No! All he does is looking down on people and think he owns the place just because he can travel the universe and never take responsibility.
