If you get a chance, watch the youtube series Building Habits, on the channel Chessbrah. Best way to build the right habits as a novice chess player. Means there are less bad habits to correct later on as well. Hope you enjoy your games and the journey.

Learn exactly how to think in the opening, middlegame and endgame — this is what I teach.
Always blunder-check your moves.
Solve tactics in the right way.
Analyze your games.
Study games of strong players.
Learn how to be more psychologically resilient.
Work on your time management skills.
Get a coach if you can.

I’m still beginning as well, but if you try playing online, always play with 10 minutes or above. Before working on speed, you need to have a longer period in order to think and execute your move. Without that time, you might either play mistakes or blunders or just run out of time.

This is the mistake I made that made my elo plummet.

Just don't lose your material for no reason and learn some basic tactics.
