A very good book, if you are willing to learn the old chess-notation, is The Game of Chess, by Siegbert Tarrasch and a modern classic, which I want to read is "The art of analysis" by Jan Timman.

The Inner Game of Chess by Andrew Soltis.

It was written in the 90s, but was reprinted in November 2014.

lots of Great books.  and Yes I did get enjoy the amateur mind.

but with books, its always seem to be more about the person than the author- sometime books just seem me intune with me.

as far as annotations of games that are instructive, I have "Logical chess" from chernov and "most instructive game book" by heisman- and think both are a little better

silman has a system, and its can be hard for a patzer to adopt it

both logical chess and instructive chess manage to teach middlegame prowess without getting losing the essence of being prepared for tactics.

Chess Fundamentals by Jose Capablanca.

It's a small book but full of good tips.
