Refusal to accept a draw

My opponent does not seem to understand a simple bishop endgame and will not accept a draw:

It is these types of games that make me want to give up. What is the point?

Morris_W3

Are you playing live chess (blitz games)? If you oppponent has more time on his clock than you do they will win on time so unless this person is exceptionally generous they won't accept a draw.  This is especially true if they're rated higher than you.  This is one of the reasons I view these types of games as just a way to practice and expeeriment with different openings/lines etc.  It is what it is, I'm afraid, my friend.  I never understood why a 3-fold repitition is not recognized either.  If this is the case you should consider turn based games (one day or more per turn)

I think you should stop complaining. Bashing your opponent in a public forum does not help. If the position is a draw, you should be able to force it to draw, regardless whether a draw offer is made or not. I can't comment on the ongoing games, nor can I give you any tips. You are a creative guy and not a beginner. You should know what to do.

Morris_W3

Don't give up.  I, for one know what is a drawn game, and truthfully would not let such a game drag on and on.  I agree - it's pointless.

RCTurner

How do I report him?

TonyH

part of playing is learning. I would probably send him a message and nicely explain your plans for drawing the position and why it works. If you do that he will hopefully realize its a waste of time and just accept the draw. If not well just remember only takes a few seconds to enter a move.

dude, he can't force a draw unless 50 moves have been played and no pawn move. after 49 moves he can move his pawn and wait for another 49 moves...

He can. Be creative. There is a rule in chess that allows this. He's just gotta figure this out himself.

@Culleux: Refusing a draw offer does not break the fair-play policy.

I think your opponent believes that he can still win the game due to the fact that he is leading by one pawn. In my opinion, it is a draw.

RCTurner

Thanks guys, it's very frustrating. I'm not that good a player, but this is a simple draw. He is just shuffling his king around.

Scottrf

Chill, he can only stall for 250 days per pawn move, wont hold the tournament up too much.

refusing the draw in a position where the he can't make a win is not allowed?

opponent can move his bishop to all corners of the board one step by one step, so it's not gonna work.

Black needs his bishop to protect the center pawns. There aren't that many squares the bishop can go to. A force draw is achiveable. White has more options than Black in this situation. White just gotta get a bit creative.

Beside, this kind of situation is common. It is as old as chess itself. The OP better get used to this, as well as the resources available to him in this kind of situations.

Btw, the position is drawish, but not yet drawn. There are still rooms for errors.

RCTurner

How is it drawish? FFS!

I don't need to move my king or any of my pawns. The bishop can always defend any pawn his king attacks.

Jesus wept.

Well, if you have had enough and don't want to think anymore, the resign button is there.

Stop asking people to comment on ongoing games.

Send your opponent this explanation as a personal message.

hankas, you're a jerk.  And you probably know it.

RCTurner, I feel your pain.  There are, unfortunately, many poor sports out there (this is proved by the fact that a good half of my live chess wins are achieved by my opponent "disconnecting" rather than having the decency to resign), and it is indeed frustrating.  Another thing to consider is that there is always the slight possibility that you will blunder horribly and thus lose (much less likely in turn-based games, but of course still possible), and your unsportsmanlike opponent may be waiting for just that to happen.  It's also very frustrating, and simply uncool.  And there is not much that can be done, except to do your thing and not worry too much about anybody else (hankas, I made an exception for you in that regard because you sound like a BIG jerk).  Good luck!

StrategicPlay

A dead draw!

This guy wants to play on?? He wants you to blunder??

finalunpurez

Good game! :)

You're saying he should bribe him to draw or something?? I agree you're a jerk!

No, he's saying that he should try to repeat the position 3 times.
