Regarding Tactics

Hi, I've been reading everywhere where everyone reccomends to beginners and lower ranked players that studying tactics is key and very important.  I'm having one problem with that.  What exactly are tactics and how do I go about studying them?

Tactical play is when you plan ahead a few moves all the time and try to figure out every variation. This is opposed to positional play where you don't really need to think ahead alot but instead work on improving your position step by step.

If you want to work on your tactical play then start studying endgames to see how all pieces work individually.

Tactics are giving easy win when your opponent is not good with chess.

Tactics?  Like throwing dynamite at the neighbor's dog when it gets too close to my cabbage?

You can practice tactics at chess.emrald.net.  It is one of my favorite sites to go to when I am not in a game here, or just want to exercise my mind.
