Rematch - When do you agree when do you refuse?

I for one  will always agree for a Rematch and sometimes feel offended when my opponent refuses. However there are certain instances when I too refuse a rematch.

So let me firstly elaborate the times I request for a rematch

  1. Obviously when I lose, but more so when I feel I blundered & lost
  2. When I lose a game due to time rather than on positional disadvantage
  3. When I lose to a person who beats me convincingly, this is generally to a better rated opponent.

In the first two cases it is revenge that I want and in the latter it is simply in awe to learn from a stronger opponent.

Now let me tell about the situations I refuse a rematch

  1. When I don't have time to play another game
  2. When I have already played & won more than 3 games in a row against the same opponent
  3. When I have already played & lost more than 3 games in a row against the same opponent
  4. When I have an opponent who is abusive and plays badly. I don't mind a rematch against a loud mouth who plays well.

I personally feel if you have the time you should never refuse a rematch request.

So that is my story, what is yours?

I don't like playing the same person twice.

I rarely give a rematch because the opponent usually just wants "revenge" and once they've got it will not agree to any more games. So unless you really enjoy playing that specific opponent, there is no point as one of you will eventually have to refuse a rematch.

I have no set method. It all depends on what is happening with me personally.

I kind of randomly decide, but if I draw, especially if we have played to the bare kings, I definitely offer a rematch

Part of it depends on if you have time and if the game was a random game.

I agree to a rematch on daily games when I've been challenged and win with the White pieces.

But there are times I get online and have time for one 15/10 game.  Whoever I randomly get and whatever color pieces I get were computer-determined and i feel no particular reason to offer or accept a rematch. There are millions of players out there with which to play another game. I don't have to be the opponent.  How much you win and lose will balance out in the end - except if you accept rematches when you've had white, you can end up playing a lot more games as black than white.

I often accept rematch, but not if I am tired, uninspired or wants to analyze immidiately.

(we are talking Blitz, right? I usually do ten minute games)

I usually go along with a rematch request, but then if it becomes a 2nd and 3rd...I often need

a break even if I would like to keep playing this opponent. Sometimes play is challenging and stimulating, dynamic perhaps, to both parties and it is understandable for both to want to keep on going. But there is no way to take a break that I can see. Also, I do not see how to challenge such an opponent to a blitz game after I go take a break. I can only see daily games as an option. I have submitted to Chess.com that there should be a way to take a break.

The loser (and it's almost always the loser, isn't it?) has a choice: click "New Game" or click "Rematch". Those with easily bruised egos, and a disproportionate sense of their own self-righteous "honor", can't seem to hit "Rematch" fast enough.

That's too much like begging.

Be strong, hit "New Game"

There is nothing wrong with asking for a rematch. Why else is there a rematch button? Shaming those who lose and then ask for a rematch is not consistent with being a good sport. Everyone likes to even the score, then do two out of three. Although I agree some people do seem to go for rematch as a compensatory thing for ego/honor/whatever....this is not always the case. It can be perfectly natural to want to continue to compete.

Why indeed? Think of how many bruised egos wouldn't need to be placated if the button weren't there! Great idea! Remove it and make the New Game button that much bigger.

NEVER !

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

All you who are whining about someone not accepting a rematch... go play a computer

I never rematch. I enjoy the reaction of spoiled brats who think that they are entitled to everything.

Usually happy to agree a rematch - unless the boss is coming and I have to switch back to that Excel spreadsheetfrustrated.png

I almost never request a rematch, I have to be just in the right mood, once in a blue moon.  I generally accept rematch requests.  Grounds for refusal:

Abusive opponent (but I have never encountered one in hundreds of 5 minute blitz games on this site).

I'm all chessed out, my concentration is shot.

I've already played 2-3-4 games with this guy.  I'm under no obligation to continue playing until he wins.

I have non-chess work to do.

A lady has just arrived who wants to get with me.  I have actually been ordered to "Stop playing chess right now!"

If the other player just hung a piece, then resigns, I will accept a request for a rematch.
