That's why I play 3-days-per-move Daily chess matches.
At my time of life, there's always the chance that my opponent will die of old age between moves.

A win is a win 🤗
I was playing in an OTB (over-the-board) chess tournament in Fredericton, New Brunswick many years ago. A player two boards down from me had a heart attack right at the board. We stopped his clock (actually, not legal according to FIDE), laid the guy out on the floor and called the emergency crew. They came and collected him. When the confusion had died down, the TD (Tournament Director) leaned over the abandoned game, studied the position for a few seconds, muttered "He was losing anyway..." and walked away.
A true chess player!
Good story. I would have burst out laughing 😅 My older sister lives near there in St. John. My younger brother says New Brunswick is not impressive 🤔
I think it's pretty much against sportsmanship to beat your opponent based on connection problems if they are winning.

I live in the boondocks of northern New Brunswick. The nearest "big city" is 5,000 people.
Yes but usually your opponents don't just disconnect, and not resigning is wasting your time, time that could be spent increasing your rating rather than hoping someone disconnects.
So you speak French too blueemu? I don't but I heard that part of NB was French.
Not really. I lived in Quebec for several years, but only about a hundred meters in from the border with Ontario. The part of NB that I live in is in the north-west, close to the US border.

This happened to Bagirov, but he was winning: https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1231547
If the opponent was in severe time trouble then I may play on and hope for a non-losing result. If the opponent was not in severe time trouble but played a move and then got up and left the board I'd probably just play a move and wait for the return before resigning and if the opponent was in gastric distress and spent an extended time in the bathroom there is the possibility of winning on time (depending on my remaining material).
I was playing, lost my queen, rooks, bishops and a knight.
Few pieces of mine was remaining on the chessboard
Suddenly conection of my opositor failed and I won due of it.
Other times I win by time:-)
I conclude that there are more chances of win if you continue.
Lets explain it:
If you resing - it is sure you will loose
If you continue you still have a chance of have a draw
or even win due of your oponent is bored and resign, or his/her connection fail.:-)
To know how to play is also important:-)
