Resign OR Finish Game

Others have expressed something similar as above quotes. Here is a response:

It is not a matter of choosing between resigning or finishing a game. It is a matter of resigning because the game has reached its end. The game is finished and it would be very strange to continue a finished game. Pointless simply.

If the player does not consider that the game is finished (s)he does not resign.

I am fully aware of my opponent's skill from his play during the game.  At the point where my game has become untenable (that is, I can't win or even force a draw), I know whether he has the skill to end it without stalemating or running out of time.  If I doubt his skill, I'll play on; if not, I'll resign.

My sentiments exactly and well said

The nobility and etiquette of chess are what drew me to the game in the first place and to say that a die-hard player should stand and face the music even if only the king is left goes against what makes this game great. We should have grace and be humble in victory and defeat. As in war is it not better to save the the warriors in the face of defeat to live to fight another day than to sacrifice all. Resignation does not show weakness, but strength and wisdom enough to know when the match is lost. As stated before even GM's resign, are they not die-hard?

I think that there are several factors to consider:

1. Possible Stalemate

2. Draw

3. Mistake by winning person allowing opponent to gain advantage and turn game around.

Someone said chess is a sport.  I have seen many Professional Football Games, where at halftime one team had a superior score advantage.  The losing team did not quit nor did anyone expect them to.  The losing team came back after halftime and won the game.  On any given Sunday any team can win.  On any day of the week any person can come back and win a chess game.  I have seen chess puzzle after chess puzzle where the winning person was   NOT    the one that won.

I am ok with people playing until checkmate.

I am ok with people resigning.

I am ok with people not finishing a game and losing by running out of time.

I am not ok with people saying you must resign.  I think that is their decision.Smile

i really dont care either way i'll just go with what i'm feeling

I think it can be boiled down to this:
If the player considers it is pointless to continue he resigns, if he consider the game is still running he continues.

I agree with JediMaster that it is not ok to say people must resign.

I think that resigning is ok when you know there's no chance to win or get a draw...

But, I must admit that some people resign easily. This is a battle, you have to fight to win, but there's some point in a game that you know you will loose and a draw will be too much of a luck.

i personally think sometimes you ought to resign. if there is no chance of winning, you resign.
JediMaster
For those people that say resigning is ok, does that mean that chess is not a sport.  I am sure that you wouldn't think that resigning is ok in Profession Football.  How about when Katrina hit and "The Saints" didn't have a stadium to play in should they have resigned?

Of course, if your opponent is in very serious time trouble, then play on and hope they run out of time!

If you are playing a game and you are not trying to win by checkmate, but by time, it is a draw by rule 10.2 I believe.

Comparing how to finish a game of chess with how to finish a game of football is unfair or you could say it is like comparing the volume of a sound with a the height of a building. It can't be compared.

A game of football is supposed to be played in a certain amount of time. When the time is out the game is finished and a result is settled at that point.

But a game of chess is finished if there is either a winner or if the game turns into a draw. It can happen any time during the game. The chess rules tell how a win or a draw can happen. Resigning is just one of the possibilities that is mentioned in the rules.

So according to the rules you can resign. But the rules don't give you permission to demand that another player resigns. That would actually be giving the other player advice on what to do, but a player is normally expected to play the game him/herself.

Most of the above material seems to concern the case of rank beginners not resigning in lost positions. I think most of us can find a little time to indulge said players. However, I've had games where players over 1500 have forced me to checkmate them with, for instance, Q+R Vs K. I believe they only learn one thing from this behaviour; it's sheer bloody-mindedness. I regard this type of play as downright rude, especially when they take a long time between moves (even when only one is permissable).

The thing they learn from playing out completely lost positions? that I won't play them again! Tongue out

dglode1

I will only resign if I see that I am about to be in check mate and there is nothing I can do about it.

But even if I'm losing by a lot I will stick it out.  There is always the chance of me turning it around or the game just running out of time in my favor.

There are masny games i have resigned becuase i felt the position was hopeless and i couldn't win. there are also many games that i have continued and finished the game also when i couldn't win, normally in a king and queen against a king. however no matter what if it's the first time i've played them i will normally ask for a rematch

Someone said you can't compare football and chess.  I am the one that compared football and chess.  The reason I did that was because someone else said chess was a sport.  I don't see people resigning in football why suggest resigning in chess, if in fact chess is a sport?   Is chess a sport?
alma_eterna
I think that you should play it out unless it's extremely obvious that there is nothing inteligent left for you to do or learn.
Kngbshpp

For me to finish any game that i am losing is hypocrisy.  So i must agree with  him.   I feels as though I must leave when my intelligience is questioned.  I dont think you like it either.  For he must put you through the agony of not getting your well deserved points.  Your rating will not go up becuase he has left. He will nut suffer the loss that he has well been given.  You must not question him for his action because he is above all else=God.  You must learn to put yourself at his mercy, as I have done.  I once was a hot-headed & mal tempered chess being, as is you. For it was not too long ago.  Through some Shaolin Kung-Fu videos on you-tube, and a few hundred "walk-outs" I have become tamed to understand 'wins' for what they really are: glorious feats of triumph, i can only praise the lord, GOD, for which gifts he has benounced upon me.  Cordially Yours.

Resigning is part of chess.  It's a win condition in the rules.  Resigning is not part of football.  That's a ridiculous comparison to make.  It's like saying you shouldn't fold in poker because you can't do it in blackjack.

TheOldReb
When to resign? I guess we all have our own opinions on this but I certainly think there are times when a player should resign and I dont mean only one move before mate either. If I have K and Q against lone king and am not about to flag (time not a factor) I am insulted if my opponent plays until mate.....even if he's a GM .  Someone once said noone ever won a game by resigning. While I understand this sentiment I would like to add : noone ever made any friends by not resigning when they should either. Smile
