I prefer when people let me finish because it tests my skill, especially on a timed game.
Resign or make them check mate?
I prefer they resign, it's polite to show you are confident the opponent can win the game and imo it's just... annoying if they just keep and keep playing, as if they hope I will stalemate them or anything.
If you want to be polite, just resign on move 1.
It's unpolite to not have a game at all. It's not just about lil numbers behind your name, you know. But indeed a better word would have been ''respectful''
It is considered to be more polite to resign when you are sure there is no way you can escape defeat. Especially in games with longer time controls there is no point in wasting your and your opponent's time.
Exceptions might be blitz, bullet, really weak opponents who don't know how to deliver mate, if you want to allow your opponent to finish a pretty mating attack, or if you want to learn by studying your opponent's mating technique.

I agree 100%.
It's your choice. But by all means, if you find that mate is 2 or 3 moves away and you choose not to resign, PLAY. Don't drag out the time control, whether it's 30 minutes or 7 days. Play the moves you have to play, lose and move on. Nothing makes your opponent hate you more than just sitting there, refusing to make the only move available to you.
The question to ask yourself is: does your opponent have to expend any mental effort to win? If so, play on. If not, resign because you're wasting his or her time by playing on.
But if he's supposed to be the only one talking sense, how are we to take his post after your comment, Alex ?
I'd rather be checkmated to see how it was done and try to avoid that sequence of moves next time. If I am losing bad i'll just resign.
Is it more polite to resign or give your opponent the opportunity to check mate you, when you know that you will probaly lose?
