Resignation Etiquette

Sort:
Aramista

hmmm... - I am continually amazed by the human condition that when faced with an ethical challenge to ones emotionally based, rather than rationally based, beliefs that we, myself included resort to emotional tirades, mud slinging, obfuscation, etc

with regard to resigning I believe that it is up to the individual player to decide when and if to resign and that if their opponent acts aggressively so as to bully the evidently weaker opponent into failing by making one or a series of mistakes then a very strong finger of bullying by emotional extortion should be pointed at the ethically weaker player

an earlier post related to a massively stronger material advantage being the basis of demanding that their opponent resign - if that was the case then why the problem, just go ahead and force a checkmate quickly and easily   Cool

NoNam31001001

and don't ruin your winning moment by tipping off the other player in advance with comments like "ready?...here it comes!" LOL aramista

The USA has a nation of more than 250 Million people, with huge number of highly educated people. Don't you think this justifies an expectation of a much stronger chess nation, with some hundred GM's ?

You might have that expecation if you don't think about it very deeply. How many GMs does China have? With a population of 1.3 billion, by your "reasoning," 20% of the GMs in the world should be Chinese.

But if you want to feel superior, by all means don't let me stop you.

This really sucks. Whenever I start with a tiny criticism against the USA, some of you superpatriots attacks me, leaving the ground of reason and compares me with 'Hitlerjungen'.

Shall I give you a list of nations which has  more chess knowledge/culture per inhabitant ? Would you shut up then ?

Iceland , Hungary, Georgia (not the US state Georgia of course), Ukraina, Russia,

Armenia, Germany (once again, we are the nation with the highest number of chess club players in the world! But germans just like to be members of all kind of clubs, therefore the other nations, and may be more, come first), Netherlands, UK, France,... I don't know where to stop.

W.r.t. the above criterion, the above are all better than USA.

I bet with you, send a team of average US club players to Moscow, in golden September, let them play randomly against people in Sokolniki Park, kids, men, girls, even drunks and babushka's. They will become very quiet after!

Poor poor mendalshtam. So set upon. Forgive me if I feel no sympathy for you given the number of times you insulted me without having even read my posts. If you were less arrogant, bullheaded, and bigotted, I'd probably feel more charitable toward you. You seem to want to be able to say any silly, impolite, or obnoxious thing about anyone without anyone responding.

And you need to feel superior to the US by comparing our chess prowess to that of Moscow? How ridiculous is that? Are you now claiming status as a Muscovite?

I'm not being sarcastic when I say that if you want to feel superior to the US because of chess, please go right ahead. I won't try to stop you.

I'm more freaked out by the use of all-caps when our thoughtful leaders at chess.com have given us both bold and italics.

It makes me so UPSET that as soon as someone drops a rook, they resign. Especially Upset when it's early in the game. It's like a football team forfeiting after the 1st quarter because they are losing. How often does that happen? NEVER. It bespeaks weakness and just plain LAZINESS.

Weak and lazy? Not weak and lazy, sir. I'm proud to say I'm just weak.

Not to mention underline (he said, emphatically).

I should stop to talk with you if you don't apologize, i will not do it this time.

1) I don't feel superior. Read my posts above about this issue. I never said something bigot (I am atheist).

2) It is not silly what I wrote, it is simply the truth. I never doubted, the USA is a strong chess nation, but there is not such a vibrant chess life as in many European countries - when you come to Germany, tell me, I show you many clubs and I take you to tournaments they organize all the time.

The good results at Olympiads during the last decades are because of the many immigrants from the former soviet Union. Just look at the US-champions ( men and women) during the last 15 - 20 years, are from Russia or other parts of former soviet Union.

I was there several  times (Leningrad, Kiev, Moscow, Witebsk), it is hard to find somebody who does not know  how to play, and many people who don't go to clubs and to tournaments, still play quite well (even 'babushkas' know to play!)

If it hurts your pride that the USA is BY FAR not the center of the chess world, it is not my problem.

To make you sleep better: you are the center of parts of science, high technology, ... and baseball.

Not @ all - The # of GMs in the US has little to do with how well I sleep.

We are the 3rd apes and none are above or below another b/c of the country they reside in but given the blitz of American goods I can see why one might want to hold on to a number. It would be nice to see Germany come up with some powerful music, art, literature - like the old days and it is really sad to see how that light has been blown out.

Resignation is just respect for other man's capacity U want to test it... SO be it

Are you really that dense or is it an act?

Please, don't answer that.

oh, come on, thats so funny. You think that is how history works? The Germans happened to be writing a lot of history books in the 19th Century, and the works they highlighted went on to form a part of our 'canon' of great works. They just happend to focus a lot on 'German' (read 'Austrian') art.  You think there were no great musicians outside Vienna? Art, and history, are bit more complicated than that. America's hedgmonic control now influences what art 'is' and what art we look at. Not to belittle any of its contibutions in any way to the Arts over the last 100 years (as he listens to Duke Ellington in the background). Perhaps a visit to Berlin is in order, if you think the Germans are draggin' their feet. Anyway, chess.....

mandelshtam

It's true, Germany has lost lots of its wit, artistic spirit, and also scientific strength.

The main reason was the Nazi dictatorship, when many good people were killed, left the country forever, or were paralyzed (a creative working environment requires hope, there was no hope during the 30th).

The international judgement over quality of art is still to much the view of USA people (a mixed view, being curious what other cultures produce we need), but this is just because of the overwhelming presence of american media (not always deserved by quality, but kept by money).

In particular, many excellent movies and books have been produced in the communist countries before 1989, who talks about this nowadays?

I didn't mean you acephalic, i meant somebody else who doesn't want me to raise my voice in any way.

I believe our (the german) literature is still good, and could be interesting for other nationals, too. May be many books remain unrecognized and are never translated.

Who knows Martin Walser, Heinrich Boell, Christa Wolf?

I think Guenter Grass is the only one who 'made it' to become known to a big group of readers outside Germany, mainly due to his nice book 'The tin drum'.

I also believe that german drama theatre is excellent at many places, well, theatre does not interest many people anymore...

alex95

Don't forget Gottfried Keller!

artfizz

In answer to: "what has Germany ever done for you?", we should not overlook their contribution to determining when anything (e.g. a game of chess) is ending. "It's ain't over till the fat lady sings!"

mandelshtam

alex 95, gottfried keller lived more than 150 years ago, we are talking about the world after WW 2.
