resigning when winning?

resigning when winning??? a perfect solution to those who feel disrespected by opponents who don't resign!!!!

i once continued to play a game when i was clearly loosing, my opponent knows that i know about it, and that i'm doing it just to annoy him. we've played quite a few right before this game and had started some nice exchange of words... so what he did was, he resigned.. and i was the one who actually got annoyed.

with a reversed similar situation to a different opponent, i resigned.. then he immediately sent me a message, and I must add a very poetic one.

point is, it's not disrespectful not to resign when clearly loosing, whatever the motive may be - to learn, to hope for a win, or even to annoy (if you're annoyed when winning, then it's your own problem).. i myself may sometimes want my opponent to resign if we BOTH know i am clearly winning.. but bottom line is, to resign or not to resign is entirely on the discretion of the player and is within chess rules.

I've actually done this on sites I don't play on often -- if I'm easily winning and they all of a sudden stop and think for a whole minute I just resign to move on.  I know sometimes the shock of realizing you're lost can freeze you up, but if they take 3-4x longer than usual right after they really start losing I just resign.

If they stop 1 or 2 moves before I mate them, I'll wait it out -- what I love is when they wait until they have 1 second left hoping I left the computer (or maybe just being annoying).  So because it's a forced mate I wait until I have about 3 seconds and then go ahead and mate them Laughing

Also, if they're really bratty and refuse to resign you can confine their king to a few squares, then promote all your pawns to knights and bishops, then one by one sacrifice them, when you have just enough left to mate them, either sacrifice that too into a draw, or just resign... just to show them how worthless the game was to you lol.  I've only done this once or twice though.

There really does come a point where I would say it's rude not to resign.

I was recently playing against an 1100 player, 2 hour time, probably making the mistake of positionally grinding him, as it wasn't till like move 30-40 that I won my first pawn. It eventually turned into a piece, and then there were just kings and equal pawns left, except I had an extra bishop. It still took about 15 pointless moves to convert it into a queen and king vs king situation, and a few more moves to actually mate. The win was so so easy, yet it took hours.

Now in this case I don't think the 1100 was rude because he really didn't know any better how hopeless playing on against me at a certain point would have been. But, had this person been an expert or higher and played till mate, he and I know we would just be pointlessly wasting time if he played on when I was in a piece up endgame and beyond. That's how easy the win was, and yeah absolutely I would call that guy rude. If he played on down a pawn that would be perfectly fine, but the piece up ending I (and probably anyone c class or higher!) could do half conscious and no doubt I think would be rude to force me to do it.

You can't understand how easy certain positions are to win for certain people until you get to that point. I have yet to be at the point where I resign pawn down (like grandmasters often do if it's simplifying to a certain ending); being so confident that I would lose to just give it up right there, but that's how grandmasters often feel (though sometimes I suspect they're willing to give up a small chance of saving the game just to show off and still take some dignity Tongue out. They'd be like, ok, I lost, but I could see the loss coming from a mile because I'm so good.).

Personally I want my rating to reflect my strength as well as possible, so yeah if I was playing an online game, let's say 1 hour time controls, I use up lots of time but am a move away from mate while the other guy barely used his time and decides to use it for a nice waiting tactic. I would wait the full hour to claim the win. I just can't reward my opponent with rating points for being a jerk.
