Returning to Chess

I played chess semi competitively as a kid, now I'm in my 40s and returning to my enthusiasm for the game. Multiple health issues impact my brain health, directly and indirectly, and I'm curious if anyone else has the experience to offer tips on navigating improvement at chess in spite neurological issues. I'm already improving slowly, it's like relearning a language, but I'm wondering if there are methods I could be using that I'm not aware of. Thanks y'all!

I played for my high school chess team for all four years, but there wasn't a tremendously serious local community for us to be involved with and we didn't have much chance to go further afield. Very few of our competitions were rated. I was reasonably successful in that arena, but I have no illusions that I would have done as well playing against opponents for whom it was a primary focus.
