Review of Pawn Sacrifice

I wish Bergman was alive to make this film, he would have made a true art film confident enough with the character of Fischer in a way that would give us an insight into the mans humanity.

Regardless of the reviews, I will still watch this movie. Although, I think I'll wait until it comes out on video! Thanks again robbie_1969!

Thanks for the reviews and views. One thing though, I find it a bit unfair and unwarranted to pin Fischer's anti semitism on Bill Lombardy. There is no reason whatsoever to think that. Frank Brady's Endgame biography speculates about where this came from and Lombardy has nothing to do with it. They were simply life long chess 'friends'.

Many of the small errors that have been reported sound like laziness rather than sacrificing clumsy facts for clearer storytelling. 

I know it's not a documentary, and I understand they got the big picture stuff right about Fischer. I understand having Fischer resign after Bxh2+? rather than drag the game out and lose some of the dramatic effect. But the small stuff that they got wrong is baffling. 

Yes that charlatan Brady! his entire book is one huge piece of speculation and conjecture.  William Lombardy is a good theory though although I suspect that it stemmed from Fischer's experience with Jews especially after the Reshevsky game where the terms of the contract were changed and Fischer refused to compromise. One gets the feeling that Fischer absolutely abhorred anyone trying to make money from his name and fame.  Where Fischers Christianity came from is a good place to begin.

But Fischers christianity is of a sort that is more abhorrent to a devout Roman Catholic than judaism. So I doubt very much that Lombardy has anything to do with it! I remember exchanging barbs with you Robby about 'Endgame' but it's a balanced book in my opinion.

Unfortunately diredctors like bergman, demille, kubrick, ford, hawkes, and hitchcock dont exist anymore.  You have films that cost $200,000,000 and they are all cgi, and bad actors.  

My dad was a pilot in WW II and sneered when the actors in the war movies did not wear their oxygen masks above 10,000 ft. So of course chess players are the toughest critics of chess movies.  

yes such logic is difficult to assail. As to the Brady book I stick by my assessment that its naught but a piece of sensationalistic journalism. I know you disagree but thats ok :D

I'm sure YOU don't have a copy, but hypothetically, if he wanted to pay you $5, you know, just out of the kindness of his heart, then maybe if one day in the future you happen to find some copies lying around, just by chance, then you could let him borrow one maybe?

You are referring to the 1961 match in California, between Fischer and Reshevsky, sponsored by Jacqueline Rothschild Piatigorsky.  After 11 games, the match was tied 5.5-5.5 (two wins each), when the schedule for game 12 was unilaterally changed by Mrs Piatigorsky, so she could attend a Sunday evening performance by her famous cellist husband, Gregor Piatigorsky.

The game was rescheduled for Sunday morning, when Fischer normally slept.  Fischer protested the change and refused to play game 12 as scheduled, or game 13 as Black until the game 12 issue was decided.

This foreshadowed the events of 1972.

That's simply not true unless they claim it to be a documentary. The point of this kind of film is to pick up on core themes, and relevant incidents which happened over a long time period, and portray it as a reasonably coherent story with beginning/middle/end which takes about 2 hours. Frequently multiple real-life characters are merged together or things which one person said are attributed to another, or events are shown in a different order or combined... because real life rarely makes a tidy story.

It is a docu-drama "based on a true story."

I'd call it historical fiction.

However, yes hollywood does seem to make chess players as nuts, like in Searching for Bobby Fischer.
