Richie Rapport

Just saw the report on Tata Steel Tournament (btw this is Wijk an Zee with a sponsors name right?) and it said this;

"Also winning was Wei Yi, who beautifully refuted an over-eager sacrifice from Richard Rapport whose innovative play continues to inspire spectators."

Is Rapport destined to be the guy who plays exciting games but loses? Or to put it another way, with so many 'solid' players is it still possible to be successful with a swashbuckling style? I would love it if he could turn the 0's into 1's with his attacking play but would it be more realistic to turn the 0's into 1/2's with more cautious games?

To be clear, I like watching his games and from a spectators point of view I wouldn't want him to change. I fear if he continues to suffer losses at the top level he might think 'screw this, i'm gonna draw this one with black as carefully as possible'. That would be sad, but also improve his tournament standings maybe?

There will always be swashbuckling players, and thank goodness for that.
But it gets hard at the top because the solid players are every bit as good at tactics as the swashbucklers - they only demonstrate that when necessary.
