I cannot help but think that the knight exists just so the queen is not invincible to any single piece.
Bishops can attack rooks, and rooks attack bishops.
Everything except the pawn can attack the King without fearing of being taken by him.
So the knight, because of its weird movements, has to exists because the queen exists!
