How many can guess how many points a rook's worth?

Avatar of Conflagration_Planet

 NOPE! You're .4 off.

Avatar of Conflagration_Planet

That's true I'm sure, but I was doing Chess Mentor, and it said that according to "modern theory" It's just worth 4.5 points instead of five.

At the start of the game 4.6

During the middlegame 5.0

During the endgame 5.4

But, can you mate a person with knights?  I know you can place the pieces in a mating position, but can you force it?

Avatar of jim995

(Back on topic) Depends who you ask. It is usually somewhere near 5 if the pawn is 1.

what are better, the knights or the queens?

I was talking about in general. Depending the position, any piece can be useless.

@propoganda

I'm talking about king vs king and knights.  No pawns.  I will examine the three knights situation soon, and get back to you on that.

Avatar of snprook

I think it might be worth two meals.

Avatar of snprook

I'll see your three and raise you two.  :b

Three knights and king versus a lone king is a reasonably well-known "just for kicks" mate. Excluding the small number of starting positions which are already stalemate (I'm not sure if it's possible to set up a forced-stalemate initial position in this endgame...worth a thought), it's always possible to force a mate with the knights.

Or as Elmer Fudd would say,  "Wook."

Avatar of Conflagration_Planet

But you can mate with a wook, and a king.

Avatar of snprook

Ok, I agree with the knight mate.  However if I got a promotion, I would get a queen of rook.

Avatar of Conflagration_Planet

That was two pawns and a queen.
