China has its own chess-like board game------Xiangqi.Xiangqi and chess has some similar pieces.So the chess pieces such as Rook,Knight,Bishop is translated into 车(pronounce che,means car,in anciant Chinese it pronounce ju, which means chariot),马(horse),象(elephant).

In Huanggang(In Hubei,China,my birthplace) dialect,车 share a same pronounciation with 猪(pig).

So the Rook,Knight,Bishop in my dialect are three animals...pig,horse,elephant.   rook=pig . Interesting  ?

Sorry for my poor English ,is my post understandable?

当然咯!你写英文比我写汉语好的多呀!And yes, it is quite interesting. At least for those interested in both Chess and China. Smile

I always have admired Scandinavians, but sure you're even above the average!

I think a pig would make an excellent rook.

I used to have a pig named Sir Francis (like in Bacon).

He used to move in straight lines. If I sat outside on a deckchair, and he wanted to be on the other side, he just walked straight through/over/under me and chair without missing a beat.

King is Elephant, Queen is Camel, Rook is Horse, Bishop is Dog, Knight is Cat and Pawn is Rabbit.

I'm Vietnamese-American and I'm telling a Chinese guy what Chinese is because he is stupid.

Chinese is a visual language, not a phonetic language like every other language.

Latin fractured into a dozen languages.

Chinese is so special that the Japanese adopt it for their writing.

Just like Figurine Algebraric.

That can represent

knight

horseman

cavalry

That's just English alone.

That is what makes Chinese so special.

Nobody gives a [bleep] about how some dialect sounds.

Don't bump old forums.

Here is the genius of Chinese, that the Japanese recognized.

The "On" reading would be "cent". Latin. French.

The "Kun" reading would be "penny". English.

Using one glyph.

Imagine a language so genius that another civilization adopted it.

I have something to say that other people have to listen to.

Yes, but don't do it on old forums.

Modern Chinese are stupid.

They watched the Hooked on Phonics commercial and bought the audio cassette tapes.

They start to write things phonetically.

Mahjong = 麻将

That's the Blue General in Chinese Chess. That's "Sho" in Japanese. Shogi, the game of the Shogun.

Mahjong is not a militaristic game. It is like poker and dominoes.

Mahjong = 麻雀 = sparrow.

There are no "Generals" in Mahjong.

Hooked on Phonics [bleep bleep].
