I very much enjoy the pace time restrictions bring to games but it's not about that purely in itself. After all a vastly higher rated player could also stall in a longer time format.
It's the combination of trying to hold out for time when it's not even rated anyway. What's the point for a much higher ranked player? It's pretty dubious ethically but what do they even get out of it? Surely they can't get any sense of achievement on a time out "win" over a player ranked hundreds of elo points lower...
The particular exercise of playing an unrated game for practice has in this case been a failure - even if they hold out on time - so why even bother?
