Switching the mindset from the pieces to the person can sometimes be tough.
I find e4 players will always be the rudest, players opening from the flanks seem rather more content with their lot.

Geez, generalizing a bit, lol. I'm sure they all drive BMW's too...
I totally agree.I always treat people with respect and expect the same.Once I played an online game (not live) and I blundered and then resigned.I wrote to him the usual things:"good game,I blundered" etc.His response was the following:"Give me a trophy!!!".I didn't expect this from a grown-up man who's supposed to be educated.I gave him nothing, not even a response.
I play very little live chess and I haven't met rude people yet.
I am a greeter and new players usually question me why am I not making my move.
One of them wrote several times:"move" or "move now" ,"it's your turn" etc. After I told him that we have 3 days to make a move he just timed out and all the impatient newcomers do the same, they refuse to play anymore.
Wondering when Chess.com will go the ICC way of phasing out "guest" or free membership. Might be a good idea in terms of tackling some of the rudeness.
People tend to display + expect decent behavior when they pay for something rather than when they get it for free. Almost everyone here who's tried chess on yahoo should agree :)
Besides => Isn't it obvious that once you are paying, you have something to lose (get booted or banned by the admins)?
I always accept an online chess request, as there really is no good reason to decline them. Live chess, it depends if it was someone I enjoyed playing with no matter what the result yes, if I just went and kicked someone's as* and they start saying that was a fluke I want a rematch I will always say no.
usually i don't refuse a request for a rematch. but if someone requesting uses rude words that would be a different matter. why would a player accepts rematch when he's being lashed out.
