That scene he was showing her etiquette of chess, not the rules. And yes, there are situations that are hopeless where you *should* (not must) resign. Since we didn't seen the entire board in that shot, we don't know just how hopeless her situation was (and not just down a piece).
Rules of chess: any situations where you MUST resign?

I live in New York. What good does the Golden State tournament do me? They need to move these tournaments out of the sticks.
New York has Marshall Chess Club they definitely hold a ton of tournaments

and that's just one tournament
the continental chess association holds a bunch
along with USCF
they all have cash prizes
CCA is nonsense. They want you to be on zoom with multiple camera angles at once. That's just ridiculous. Like we have to set up a studio to play a game.
cuz then people cheat
and cheaters suck
Either way they're now holding otb tournaments so you don't have to worry about that

you can even just search it up its not difficult

I live in the center of it all. California is a wasteland here in 2022.
could you maybe read this again?

The answer is simple.
You consider the following factors:
1 The position
2 Your strength vs your opponent's strength
Then determine whether or not:
1 You could realistically draw or win
2 You could learn something from the remainder of the game
If yes to one of those last 2 questions, then play on. Otherwise, resign.
Note that match or tournament situation could affect the above as well.

Hey, come on, you can't let logic get in the way of good trolling

I remember hearing a tip, albeit it was for beginners: Don't resign until you feel there are no more lessons left to learn (or until you just comeback and win.)

...and if both are true?
You are never required to resign, however, most players will, when they feel they have no chance to draw or win the game, and they won't learn anything from having the rest of the game played out.

You have to bear in mind that the caretaker was a bit of a tool with a congenital urge to be loved. I think he just wanted to hold her hand.
Beth darling, come home. I've been keeping our bed warm for so long now. Oh come home, I'll stop wearing your clothes when you're out. Promise this time Xxx

You're supposed to resign as soon as you go down material. No sense in wasting people's time and ensuring you'll never get another game at the club again.
so then why do grandmasters play the queens gambit? if black plays the accepted variation, then white would be forced to resign as he's down a pawn. i guess grandmasters are just bad at the game then

thats probably the reason why ur only 800
on chess.com thats even less than otb
I have no idea where you're getting 800 from but in any event: I don't care about my chess ratings. I resign games left and right in winning positions when my opponent won't resign. I don't calculate or pay much attention to what's going on in the game. It's a casual board game with nothing on the line. I'm not wasting energy on that and neither should anyone else lol.
let us ignore every tournament that awards over a million in cash prozes then

At my club there are a few kids who always play until a checkmate. Nobody complains about them let alone boycotts them.
Maybe someone should teach them etiquette and the notion of respecting time.
you'd boycott children for their determination?

They are good kids, quite polite and respectful and know etiquette quite well. But probably someone should teach you that. You are a troll, sir.
No, trolling is playing on in a dead lost position. It's America in 2022. Nobody has time for that.
stop giving a bad name to our country and shush
TacticalPrecision, there's a world outside of America. Just so you know.
even in america there are a ton of chess tournaments
there's even the St Louis open that is one of the top tournaments in the world!
