I was playing a 30 live standard game. The clock ran out and I had a king and a pawn, he just had a king. The computer said the game was a draw not enough material.  I had more points and you can  checkmate someone  with a king and queen . I am confused one with the point sitiauation  when the clock ran out , I was ahead in poiints.  I f I promoted that pawn  in therory I could have won? Where am I wrong?

If the clock actually ran out you are correct Fide rules are that you win.

If your opponent claimed a draw before time actually expired ( for online this counts as clicking the draw button) then a draw is correct.

dont I have to agree with the draw?

He offered a draw several  times earlier in the game when he should have resigned, I declined.  I thought you had to agree to a draw?

No read article 10.2 of the Fide Laws of chess.

I read he offered, I refused. So are you saying at any point in a  game you can claim a a draw and be rewarded witn one  when you are losing? Whats the point of having points then? He asked for a draw , I refused so how did he get one? I appreciate your help but you have not answered that question

In online chess it is not identical to over the board although it is similar.

In online chess I don`t know of any site that distinguishes between offering a draw and claiming a draw.

Instead online chess tends to have a single button for both offereing as well as claiming a draw.

For your game on chess.com the rules almost but not completely match Fide Rules.

I recommend looking up rules instead of asking humans as a general policy.

Article 10.2 is used for  claiming a draw not offering one.

lol what does articvle 10.2 say

Avatar of Dale

I also doubt should resign is possible in any game whether chess or not.

I predict earthlings resign whenever they fancy becoming a silver medalist.

I could tell you about 10.2 but instead I recommend 10.2 chess googling as a homework assignment.

You then can be more confident that the information  you find is not just the opinion of some earthling.

what ever. I read article 10.2--------so why do we have points then???????? He claims a draw but is losing on points.  . I could see article 10.2 working if the game was tied on points but it was not.  The points should be the tie breaker.

Avatar of Dale

I agree that article 10.2 is basically a good idea but also a ridiculous rule at the same time since there is hardly any consensis as to what constitutes normal means by arbiters around the world.

Avatar of Dale

I thought it was typical for earthlings to win by checkmating instead of collecting points.

material points------I had more. if there are no arbitrators  then how did he get the draw?

Avatar of Bur_Oak

Material "points" are a way of assessing who is ahead in material. They do not exist as such in the rules of chess. You can have a substantial lead in points, but if a stalemate occurs, the game is a draw.
