Rules variant to reduce draws

Would "piece demotion" be a reasonable idea? I was thinking it could work something like any piece that moves to the eighth rank could be "demoted" to a pawn, placed on the same file as the piece demoted on at the second rank (so that square would have to be vacant), becoming a regular pawn from there on out. Additional rules could be that the new pawn could be captured on the demotion square on the very next move (like en passant) and that either side could have no more than 8 pawns. The idea of course is to make games that would be draws by insufficient material potentially winnable.
