Sad but true...

I guess I was naive when I joined this site, believing that playing games of chess could be done without anything 'attached' to it. I am not here to make friends, but nor enemies. I just simply cannot understand the cowardly behaviour from what I suppose are written by adults(?).

Why the need of kicking someone who is lying down by comments like 'you suck'? Winning or losing, why do it at all?? I didn't even do it in my kindergarden years! Is it because people with small genitals need to desperately boost their tiny egoes? (the genitals remains small). Because they would never dare to do such things face-to-face, sober nor drunk.

Why not try tutoring instead, offer your help when WINNING. Or bow out gracefully and like a KNIGHT when losing...

Sorry to bother you all, but if you have read this far -why not leave a comment? :) I know a lot of you are thinking 'man up', block and bla bla bla, but prove me wrong, that I am not naive and that there is hope for a better world -or at least keep a good one.

Sincerely,

Dave

Umm... seems you're no better than the people you complain about? You insult their genitals.

No, I just forgot to write (true!) that I have the smallest one...but thought it was too...off topic? Laughing But thanks for...eh, a comment at least. I am the proof, that even with a tiny...I have no need whatsoever to write anything bad about anybody. It is possible, and I urge everyone out there to try it! Smile

Instead, if you write something NICE (what is that?), it even makes you feel good!!! Careful, try it and you might even like it.

So tell me VyboR, why did you highlight those sentences in particular with red? Btw. I never said that I am better than ANYONE ELSE...in fact, I know I suck (at chess), I simply don't need to be reminded about it...

I just got the idea of starting a (chess) site for PAYING members only, and no morons there could hide behind anonymity! How much do you think that would be worth? I would gladly pay 9.99 USD a month, and I'll throw in a minimum amount of commercials too Cool

leiph18

I highlighted. I guess it was unnecessary because I mention it directly with my 2nd sentence.

As for paying sites, they're out there (ICC, Playchess), and you'll find much less trash talking... although people are people so it's never gone completely.

It's like a taxi driver once told Billy Connolly, "Wherever you're going, never take an idiot with you. You'll be sure to find one wherever you are." Also, I'm not sure how many of the regular users here are actually adults.

dejvidd

True dat, kaynight! In a 'free' world, this is the price to pay Smile

Sorry leiph, (or VyboR) -got the wrong person there...but thx for the tips on the other sites though!!

I guess my only 'solution' is to only play the computer, then I don't have to disable the chat! At least it has the courtesy, win or lose, to write 'gg' at least...Tongue Out

Geoffrey, I quote one of the Marx brothers who said: "Any club that accepts me as a member, I wouldn't want to join"...or something like that Laughing

I've always liked that line. :)

I myself was surprised to find, not just average accounts, but masters acting like children. This is unacceptable to me, how the people we all look up to set such a bad example. So the trickle down effect doesn't surprise me.

Another useful line of Groucho's is "Hello, I must be going", which is about as short as a one-liner gets.

Geoffrey, true that the average age here is probably much lower than expected...they should have a juveni...sorry, a youth section here! Wink

@Nekhemevich, childish behaviour (and sore losers) come in all ages. Bad examples are everywhere, but fortunately, so are the good ones!

Well someone has to set the standard. Masters should be the positive role model. I admit that all people are imperfect, but if the role models are not behaving right, I'm not surprised people are acting rudely? Another thing about this me attitude; it's amateurish. Real players have class. It is a gentleman sport; and woman.

There's where you went wrong: you made a false assumption.

Chess involves huge amounts of time and huge amounts of ego, therefore the age groups that are most suitable for it are young kids or adolescents since they live at home and have plenty of time. Also plenty of immaturity and naivity. Young people don't realize that adults have to struggle to stay alive and to maintain a livable residence (and to support immature, ungrateful kids) by working long hours and taking classes to stay ahead in their careers. Those young smart alecks living at home for free often get criticized and controlled in real life so they feel they have to strike out at others to try to hurt them the same way that they have been hurt, and the Internet with all its anonymity gives them a perfect chance to strike out at adults.

I had a really bad experience years ago on Yahoo games. I had just failed my Ph.D. qualifier exam after months of preparation, I was an extremely poor student, I was at my lowest low, and I thought I'd play a game of chess on Yahoo to get my mind off my problems, then my smart aleck opponent began taunting me right off the bat in chat with "You don't play too well, do you?" That was really low, and that was the last straw for me with Yahoo games, which I'd already tried to avoid due to all the cheating going on there.

I see such adolescent trolls in every forum where I've hung out, and their behavior is so despicable that they have often been the sole reason I've left forums permanently. Wise moderators would do well to eliminate such trolls that waste everyone's time and drive away serious, productive members.

Here we go again with a thread about people stating concerns about seemingly "rude comments." You guys need to adopt the idea of taking such comments with pleasure. I mean, c'mon hunnie, this is chess! It's a game, just like Kaynight said. And when people are playing games, they are having fun! So much fun, playing this game, with good people! Saying nice and wonderful happy things! Makes me feel so good thinking about how many nice people I've met on this site!

Always remember. When people put on their grumpy pants, they disable chat because they need a hug! And who doesn't like hugs, right? So if you give them hugs they will feel all happy inside, and say nice and heartwarming things! You will make them feel like flowers and sunshine all over and put a big smile on their face!

Hi all, I'm 14 years old, and I'd like to apologize on behalf of all the youth out there thinking that it's all well and good to be unsportsmanlike and disrespectful. Chess is a game that utilizes only the human mind, and frankly, it's sad to see chess players stoop to the level of trash-talking and uncourteous behaviour seen in contact sports (I too am an avid baseball player, and see this on a regular basis). And it's even more disappointing to see it from masters of the game! Chess.com should create a set of systematic rules that define unsportsmanlike conduct and penalize players that use such language through chat. Unfortunately, banning individual words won't do the trick, so it seems like a long shot at this point in time. However, I firmly believe taunting has absolutely no place in chess; players who do and spread this behaviour, whether they are sub-1000 or over-2000, show not only a lack of respect for others, but for the game as a whole.

It's not only the youth that are acting that way, my lord. Remember you have the adults on this site as well who want to say the bad words who were never taught how to behave in a socially favorable manner. It is for this reason to say nice things to them, and to thank them for their banter. Probably because their parents never said nice things to them when they were your age. It is only at that moment when you say nice and happy things to them it might give them dignity!

Yeah, I don't know why people say things that aren't nice.

Those people are ignorant, unlikable, unlovable, and undignified, in that order.

December_TwentyNine

I once had a random member post a note on my profile telling me that "lol i suk." I countered his profile with a "Thank you! I really appreciate that!" type of comment.

And you know what's strange? I really do suck! When I drink my ice tea at the cafe where I play, I drink it through a straw! So, actually yes, I DO suck!

I just find it amazing, how incredibly inteligent that guy was. How did he know that I suck!!! He's probably a very good chess player, being that he knows something so personal about me :)
