It's annoying to be made fun of after a blunder or loss, but being called a cheater or other vulgar language after winning is fun Tongue Out

I guess I was naive when I joined this site, believing that playing games of chess could be done without anything 'attached' to it. I am not here to make friends, but nor enemies. I just simply cannot understand the cowardly behaviour from what I suppose are written by adults(?).

Why the need of kicking someone who is lying down by comments like 'you suck'? Winning or losing, why do it at all?? I didn't even do it in my kindergarden years! Is it because people with small genitals need to desperately boost their tiny egoes? (the genitals remains small). Because they would never dare to do such things face-to-face, sober nor drunk.

Why not try tutoring instead, offer your help when WINNING. Or bow out gracefully and like a KNIGHT when losing...

Sorry to bother you all, but if you have read this far -why not leave a comment? :) I know a lot of you are thinking 'man up', block and bla bla bla, but prove me wrong, that I am not naive and that there is hope for a better world -or at least keep a good one.

Sincerely,

Dave

Take your pick of any number of reasons.  But it does boil down to some things people have gone through in life.

Low self esteem

Single family homes

Lack of a strong male role model

Dominant mother

Abuse

Also keep in mind that we live in an age where technology has taken over, and we have more avenues to communicate than ever before, yet we feel more alone than ever before.

Of course! :) I know what a cheater is! It's someone that likes cheetos! So if you like cheetos, you're a cheater!! ;) What a sweetheart to say that you like cheetos! Because It's the cheese that goes CRUNCH! mmmmm! :)

@December...being called 'whore' is not my idea of 'fun'. Sure it's a game, but when I play (any game) I do NOT sink as low as to mock my opponent(s) -not even face-to-face in physical games when I have the chance to...open up a can of you-know-what.

I know there are parents, for most of us, who should've raised the kids in a decent manner and behaviour, but not all of us apparently were so lucky.

I don't even mind cheating, because it is after all -'just a game'. I want to become a better player, and win or lose, it's both fun! Although winning is more fun...Wink

Even mockery has a level of degree of respect. If I could, I would hug all of you here Kiss -regardless of sexuality, ethnicity and age. I repeat, it's just a game...but I hoped for a gentlehumans game...

@which... -you are the king for sure! Kudos to whoever is raising you. My level of hope (for this world) just rised.

@December...thanks, sincerely, for putting a smile on my face Laughing You sure have the right attitude, and I will try a bit of that...hm, reverse phsycology(?).

I just disabled the chat. I hate ill mannered persons, like most of the people on this site, at least at my noob rating.

Actually, "whore" is an acronym for When Heaven OverRates Everyone." So what your opponent meant when he said "whore" is that he was referring to the Heavens overrating your skill. For example, I see you are 1414 in live standard, so when he said that, It's when heaven overrated you to a 1700, making you seem much, much stronger. It occurs when you start playing a really strong endgame, coordinating all your pieces together and getting them on good squares. So in truth, a 1300 like me would be overrated to a 1600 or 1700 as well, if I were to play in such a manner. It's actually a compliment and I'm surprised you didn't know this!

December_TwentyNine

Yes...I see you on that one, my lord. Honestly, I don't think anyone else would have called me out on that...

That is nice, creating beautiful acronyms.

it is a game. But if we were playing the game face to face to people would never behave the way the do here on line.

Lots of internet tough guys.

Simple rule would be to ask yourself, would you say or do the same hing sitting across the table from someone?

The world could use a little more civility.

I play for fun and enjoyment I win with honor and lose with honor; move on to the next game

I have to say (adolescent-loathing adult here, btw) that I've found the behaviour on the site mostly very refreshing, particularly the on-line tournament crowd. I don't play a lot of live chess, which is where I reckon a lot of this comes in? I've played about 300 on-line / correspondant games and had about one encounter with the usual purile Internet stuff (which was a bit difficult to tell, actually, because there was a language barrier problem). I've met scads of really interesting and very sportsmanlike people through the games.

0.3% is pretty good going... Perhaps try going for a few more on-line games, dejvidd, if you enjoy that form of the game?

@Dave : chess.com is the chess website 'for everyone', where a lot of common Internet behaviour is tolerated.

There are other places (such as ICC), where you'll find people behaving in a more decent way, closer to what you could expect in a real-life chess club. But you have to pay to get there.

Or a bit less (over)sensitivity.

Mr Williams, great that you have a thick skin, but let's say that somebody verbally abused your child/wife -would you still be able to avoid being oversensitive? Great! Because I like tolerant people Smile Sit and do nothing and let people know that their rude behaviour is accepted. I do not have any children -yet, but this is not how I will raise them...

Thank you everyone for the tips on paying chess-sites! The chance of being able to act out my oversensitivy, is priceless.
