School chess project

Hi

I'm doing a chess project at school on how chess computers work, and I need to gather some information about how they work, any advice would be much appreciated, there is a deadline however, it's in 3 weeks, so if possible, please post your advice by the end of the week.

brfc, I made a computer chess engine as my 3rd year project for my Computer Science degree so I can probably help you out a bit via PMs...

 It beat my professor.  He promised to test it with 1. e4 (and darn right, too) so I gave it a long Caro-Kann opening book.  It beat him but only by picking up his hanging pieces.
