pepli222: No, I'm just a user/fan. Sorry.
doxob: If you wish to use a different wav file, like the one I linked to, copy it to your bin/sounds folder. But first rename the original move.wav file. (Call it original_move.wav, for example.)
SCID vs PC

New version of SCID 4.4 is available. have been using SCID vs PC 4.8 till now, upgraded it to 4.10. Compared to SCID vs PC 4.10, in my opinion SCID 4.4 is better.

Why is it better? Glancing through the changelog I don't see anything particularly compelling in this upgrade.

MrEdCollins: Thanks for starting this thread and providing the platform to discuss this excellent application. And I just looked at your site and it's a great addition for anyone using SVP. I've been playing with SVP for the past several months trying to decide between it and Chessbase. I really like SVP and am glad not to have to spend the $$.
Also, you offered the great tip a few messages back on how to include the source line into the scid.gui file, but you don't list it on your website. I think it belongs on there too.

sir, are you a kind of a "member" of SCID vs PC development team , this software is just great, even if it was a commercial i'll buy it (at least cheaper than Chessbase lol ), but what i regret on this software is that "Notation,Engine output, and Board, etc" , they are separated , but fortunately it can save the setting..
stevenaaus is the author of the ScidvsPC version of the original program (he's participating in this thread as you can see).

You're welcome. No problem.
Actually it was knightstalker who first started the thread, a little more than a year ago but yes, I've definitely contributed a little bit.
And yes, good eye. The tip about editing the scid.gui file, and removing ALL of the data for the fonts, and putting that data elsewhere, probably belongs on my tribute page too. I'll have to add that as soon as I can. (But that's really an advanced tip, because that isn't necessary at all... just something that worked out well for me. I certainly don't wish to confuse anyone.)

Ed - i have implemented a custom piece system in svn. Similar to yours, except it just reads all piece sets in $HOME/.scidvspc/pieces, and truncates the list to 12 sets max.
I did have problems though compiling scid_vs_pc with the regular tdom version. Resolved by pulling tdom from the development git repository.
I'm not sure what you mean. tdom is not linked to at compilation afaik, only used as a package require for correspondence chess at runtime.

For some reason, I'm having trouble installing both Fritz and Chesscube fonts. I'm using the "source piecefonts..." statement in the scid.gui file, which works fine for all other fonts except those. Those two return an error about "{" issue. Has anyone else run into this? Otherwise, I'll dive into the text file and see if I can see a missing or extra {, which is my only guess.

sangahm,
My Fritz font text file starts off like this:
lappend boardStyles Fritz
set pieceImageData(Fritz,25) {
iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAASwAAAAZCAYAAACLvRPfAAAABHNCSVQICAgI
and my ChessCube font file starts off like this:
lappend boardStyles ChessCube
set pieceImageData(ChessCube,25) {
iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAASwAAAAZCAYAAACLvRPfAAAABHNCSVQICAgI
Please check to make sure your font files start like this too. (Both end with a single } at the end.)

Good work. I assume we'll see this with the next release, whenever that may be.

For some reason both fritz and chesscube ended with two } at end. Deleting one of these in each file solved the issue.

I modified the Habsburg set to give each piece a white outline and a gray "shadow" just like the Burnett set that comes with SCIDvsPC. Habsburg is one of my top two choices, and I like playing with the set in the normal flat mode and this raised and outlined format both from time to time. I call it HabsburgOS (OS=outlined and shadowed).
https://www.dropbox.com/s/16b7pny6jwipnoa/scid-HabsburgOS.txt
(incidentally, my other favorite choice is the USCF set, and I will probably make an OS version of that, too, at some point.)
DunnoItAll:
I have a special request. Can you tell me how you did the white outlines and shadows? I tried and slightly enlarging the piece and paint it white as background, then grayed out and move the piece down and right. My results don't come out as clean as yours. Any tips?
I'm trying to make an OS version of the Fritz font you submitted.

That's pretty much what I did, but it took me a couple of tries to figure out that you have to enlarge it quite a bit to make the white area around it look more distinct. Do you use inkscape? If so I used a dynamic offset of 1.5 for the white outline and gray shadow pieces.

Alright, I'm in over my head. I was going to use Photoshop but didn't get the results I was looking for. I then loaded Inkscape and after some trial and error (much trial and error), I'm giving up. Spent way too much time, but learned quite a bit about IS.
On to actually studying chess.

I could maybe make a video showing how to do it if I can find some time. Inkscape is pretty intimidating at first, but you gradually figure some things out if you are persistent.

That would be great if you could find the time, as Inkscape is very intimidating, as the tutorials tell you "just enough" but not quite enough.
I found the dropdown shadow filter, and on screen everything looked great. But when I saved it, uuencoded, and loaded back into ScidVsPC, the background was all white and there was no shadow effect!
I kept advancing one step, then falling back again.
New tip. If you find yourself loading Scid vs. PC and then immediately always opening the same database, you can automate the process and load this database automatically, upon startup.
It's easy. Just create a shortcut to the program and then edit the properties of this shortcut. Add the name and location of your database at the end of the target. (Right-click the shortcut and then choose Properties.)
For example, when I view the properties of my target, I see "C:\Program Files (x86)\Scid vs PC-4.10\bin\scid.exe"
If I edit that line and add e:\chess\pgn\collins.pgn to the end of it, when I click on the shortcut to load the program, it will now automatically load my collins.pgn file, which is a small database of all of my tournament games located on my E: drive.
