SCID vs PC

Nope, games just don't delete. Not a huge deal as I don't have that many games that I do it with; except in one of my databases that have a lot of duplicates.

Will have to install the newest version soon and test again.

And I'm not fully postitive I have tried in the version I'm on now. I just know that last time I tried it didn't work.

Just installed Scid vs PC 4.14 - currently on Windows 8.

I am very pleased with this powerfull program but I have some bugs to work out. When the program starts, the 'Tip of the Day' and the 'Welcome to Scid' windows are hidden and docked on my taks bar. The only way I can view them is if I click Maximize from the Taskbar.

Martin_Stahl in some occasions the compact command will not work and the games marked for deletation are not deleted. In those occasions I close the archive and the database, open both again and go to mantenance -> compact, and this way the compact command work all the time at the second attempt. I have seen this only in the most recent versions of ScidVSPC for Windows 64X: in older versions the compact command used to work at every attempt. By the way, I am the guy who made the Portuguese translation that comes with the most recent version 4.14.

nimzotech you can see those at any time going to the menu "help" -> Tip of the Day  / Startup Window.

Cool, thanks. That might be it. I'll test tonight and see what happens.

Hi, does anyone know how to remove a game from a database.

I listed the games and tried to "remove", "delete" a game from game list, but there is no save the database option in the program. And after closing database when i open it, the game is still in the database.

It hasn't been mentioned yet, but if by chance your database was a collection of games in the pgn format, you could always just open that pgn file with Textpad or Notepad or your own favorite text editor, look for the game(s) you wish to delete, and delete them manually from the file, assuming the other methods didn't work for you.

If the games aren't in the pgn format, you could always convert them to this format, delete the game manually with your text editor, and then convert them back to the original format once you're finished.

The only thing i can think of is, that ScidvsPC has been installed in "program files", and/or the databases are in there. Windows after Vista does funny things with files in these directories, and you really have to install ScidvsPC in an unpriviledged directory. C:\ is now the default. Or anywhere in your home dir.

It is also possible, but unlikely, to have the same DB open in Scid and ScidvsPC (or multiple programs) at the one time, with undefined behaviours.

Hey - it's be resolved. When you cant compact a db, it's due to having a chess engine open. Evil or Very Mad

On windows, opening a base, and then an engine, means the engine will prevent removal of the old si4 file during compaction. (It's due to file descriptor inheritance of the forked engine)

I have written some checks to enforce this (in subversion) but since 4.15 is not coming out soon - for the moment the work around is to close all engines first.

I found what may be a bug.

If you open a dB using the Open command, because the dB is not in your list of previously opened dB's, then the app is closed down because of a crash or restart of the computer or computer shutdown (any manner that does not include clicking on the close button of the app), the dB is not remembered as a previously opened dB.

Here is how to replicate:

Open a dB that is NOT in your previously opened list.

Restart or shutdown your computer.

Restart SvP and you will see the dB is not in the previously opened list.

Load a dB that is not in the previously loaded dB list.

Quit SvP by clicking the close button.

Restart SvP and you will see the dB is there.

I realize this is probably a very rare issue. I only found it because my laptop has been having issues.

Probably not a bug, that's by design. The program save preferences when you close it.

Avatar of MrEdCollins

I agree... probably not a "bug."

JogoReal nailed it.  Only upon a proper close is the name of the database probably updated in the list.  If the program crashes, it hasn't yet saved this name.

I suppose it would be possible for the program logic, just after loading a database, to then immediately save that name, so that in the event of a possible crash, the name is already saved.

I'm not sure how important that is, or how often that happens.  As you pointed out, it's easy to simply relocate that database and then reload it again manually.

You can do one of the following:

1. You can search for PGN files for the openings you want.

2. You can creat a dB and add games with the openings you want.

However, I'm not sure SvsPC is the best tool for opening study. There is a piece of software I used before called Chess Position trainer. It tracks your imnprovement in openings and uses a structured progress through different lines.

CPT is a good program. Ive also heard Lucas Chess is decent.

Opening Reportoire management goes perfectly with Scid vs. PC when you learn how to use the tree and the mask. See help files: http://scidvspc.sourceforge.net/doc/TreeMasks.htm

Thanks a lot for the recomendations.

Started looking at ScidvsPC opening mask.   Looks good!
