You are right in trying to play gambits at Your age. But You should train a lot to acquire tactical prowess and positional understanding to be able to ascertain why a non-book is inferior to a book move.

This definition is okay, but maybe too rigid or dogmatic. A more flexible, permissive definition would be better in this case.
I understood the definition alright. I just -- sort of disagree -- with it. The Scotch Game/Gambit is interesting, very rich in tactical possibilities and loaded with many pitfalls. Thus, I think, such a narrow definition -- although technically correct -- is not necessarily useful.
