For enterprising chess teachers there are a number of strategies to keep in mind when operating in the NY area.
The NY metro area is business-corrupt, everyone in these high income areas expect those they deal with to be untiringly flattering and to bend the truth.
Chess, as anyone who has seen all the scandals and underhanded tactics knows by now that the most ruthless, heartless SOBs do the best in this as in every other game and sport.
Laws are made to be broken. Leading lights in this genre all came from NY; from our current President, to those unlucky enough to get caught. Bernie Madoff is a stellar example
of getting away with crimes until something unexpected such as a market reversal happens like the tide going out in a harbor full of unsolved crimes...
Keeping this in mind, it is vital to tell all your students, but especially their parents how "smart" and "gifted" they are. If alone with their parents always tell them that their kid is your
"best" and most "promising" student, sure to win major games and tournaments. Complimenting their fragile egos is essential to maintain their loyalty to you.
Also tell the parents how chess opened up so many doors for you in the "real" world: How what you learned in this game made you a top poker player in the casinos and how transferable all the chess skills are for example in contract bridge and in more remunerative things such as day trading stocks, especially non-marginable "penny" stocks. All the chess study will never be wasted;
Point out how many of the chess prodigies and grandmasters went on to stellar careers in other fields.
Another successful thing to expand your chess tutoring business is to give out generous gift certificates and if the parents are wealthy give them cash back if their children have the most minor successes in competitions and tournaments. You may have to invest $20K in such a business-building plan but it is sure to explode your tutoring with the word spreading like wildfire. "Mike gave us $500 after little Binky and Brad came in third place in the 6th grade tournament!" Everyone likes a generous tutor with cash incentives like that! Also be sure to thoroughly map out each of your pupils from affluent families! Think of all those who've gone before who were able to parlay their connections in humble teaching jobs into million dollar incomes!
